SINCE WE'RE STILL TALKING ABOUT HERMAN CAIN, HERE'S ANOTHER PHONY SCANDAL

I'm sick of the Cain story -- but it won't go away, obviously, and it's obvious that the attacks on the accusers are just getting ramped up. Right now there's this at Drudge:

The first one is from yesterday; I've explained why it's nonsense. As for the second one, Drudge links this Daily Mail, story, which says this about Sharon Bialek's Chicago residence:

A Fox News reporter confronted Ms Bialek during an interview today about living in the same building as Obama top aid David Axelrod.

She was asked: 'One of the things is that you lived at a 505 North Lake Shore Drive apartment, right? This is the same building, it happens to be the same building David Axelrod lives in. Do you know David Axelrod? Ever have any interaction with him at all?'

Um, folks? This isn't some duplex on a quiet residential street where two families live and become close friends. This is what the building looks like:

From the building fact sheet (PDF):

* Building--645 feet tall, 70 stories, 65 residential floors....
• Originally 879 units--studio, 1 BR, 2BR, 3 BR, penthouses
• Now 758 owner resident units, with 127 combined units

The place has 758 units. Oh, yeah, but I'm sure Sharon Bialek knows every single person in the building, and is a close personal friend to all of them.

Have you ever lived in a big-city apartment building? I live in a Manhattan building with about a hundred units. I've been there for more than twenty years. There are people I've been nodding hello to for most of those years, but I still don't know their names. They don't know mine. We don't socialize. That's how big-city buildings are. Maybe Chicago is different, but I doubt it.

I also like the presumption that living in the same place makes it easier for Axelrod and Bialek to conspire -- which I guess would be true ... if you lived in a society without telephones, e-mail, texting, faxes, snail mail, planes, trains, cars, cabs, public transit, or simple human locomotion. "Omigod -- I've found the person uniquely qualified to bring down Herman Cain, but getting in touch with her would require leaving the house! What'll I do???" Give me a break.

It's almost funny how un-cosmopolitan some of our Conservatives are.

Too many of them come from rural or suburban areas, and think we city folk know all of our neighbors. But then, even the ones who live in DC, and Atlanta, are like that.
I lived in Peter Cooper Village in Manhattan for a little over a year, and didn't know a soul. I also lived in small to very small apartments in Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island, and didn't know a single 'neighbor.'

The problem is that too much of this country still has a Mayberry mentality - and that's the part of the country that's rock-hard Conservative. Our urban, and their nearby suburban, areas, tend to be more Liberal.
